Tapes Not Sticking To Low VOC Paints?

Posted by Corey Breed on

Home Performance contractors keep telling me that the new Low VOC (volatile organic compound) paints that some builders are using is making it hard to set up a Duct Blaster® or DucTester™.  It's hard enough setting up for a duct leakage test without then having to worry if the tape is going to stay where you put it.  That's one of the attributes of Vent Caps Systems that makes them invaluable for sealing duct systems.  Once they're up, they're up.  Vent Caps™ seal air vents whether they're dripping in condensation, freshly painted, or dirty as the dickens and they make...

Michigan Energy Code Mandates Duct Leakage Testing

Posted by Corey Breed on

According to the Department of Energy, Michigan will be the fifth state to adopt the 2015 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC), with "amendments, deletions, and additions deemed necessary for use in Michigan."  For now, this only affects new residential construction and significant renovations, without requiring unaltered building systems to comply.  Michigan's new energy code requires less than 4 ACH and <4% duct leakage per 100 sf. of conditioned space with testing, "conducted by an approved third party." As expected a RESNET HERS® Index will be accepted to show compliance.  The minimum Energy Rating Index scores are:   Click here to download a...

What is a duct blaster test?

Posted by Corey Breed on

Sorry You've probably heard the term but. . . Duct Blaster® is a registered trademark belonging to The Energy Conservatory™ for their marquee fan/manometer duct leakage testing system, aka The Minneapolis Duct Blaster®. It’s likely to go the way of Kleenex, Aspirin, Escalator - all formerly trademarked product names that became synonymous with the actual product. The test people are actually referring to is called Duct Leakage Testing which is now mandated all across the country - in one form or another - and the backbone of any worthwhile residential energy audit.  It involves the pressurized testing of a home's ducted air conditioning system for diagnostic purposes.   The...

I'm going to sell you nothing - and you're going to like it.

I sell reusable air duct covers.  They're used to seal air vents, registers, or whatever you call them.  Unlike some other products that cover air vents to block drafts, Vent Caps are rugged tools used to seal air vents for Duct Leakage Testing, the diagnostic testing of a home's ducted a/c system.  My reusable register covers can cut your DuctBlaster® setup time in half, help you spend less time with/on/carrying a ladder, and save you tons of money on disposable plastic tapes.  Grill masks, register sealing films, duct masks, and even plastic wraps all have to be ordered OVER AND OVER again.  Vent Caps...

Tape Got You Down?

Posted by Corey Breed on

Halloween is here.  The familiar faces of death will walk among us at cocktail parties and in our neighborhoods.  Whether it's a man/bat that will suck all life from you, or a giant monster that mauls you to pieces - they're each symbols of a particular fear.  If you're most afraid of being eaten alive, you're not going to be as afraid of Frankenstein as you would at the thought of a brain eating ghoul, or a werewolf.  Each has a different method of killing and duration of suffering.   If Frankenstein beats you over the head?  That's it - no suffering.   A pack of...
